Be a virtual traveler!
|
It's really awesome to do this online translator job. During working process, a lot of websites all around the world will emerge into my eyes. Most of them are about global issues such as support AIDS patients far away in South Africa, or things such as The 2010 Ypulse Youth Marketing Mashup which is a good opportunity for people to communicate with each other based on common interests-marketing to youth with technology. ( http://mashup.ypulse.com/)
From what I can see here, internet is like the real world but being virtual. We always need to explore things new to us to widen eyesight and enlighten mind.
It becomes possible when you visiting different websites and communicating with various people online. It's like traveling through a lot of places and talking to many different people in our real life.
So let's be virtual travelers even if we don't have much money and much time. We still can open our web browser and find out what's going on in this world.

Transnational Exchange

On February 16-19th in Boston, USA, over 100 participants includes students, cooperatives, farmers and Fair Trade organizations came from all over the world, united in attending USFT Convergence.
United Student for Fair Trade (USFT) is a national network of student organizations, was formed in 2003 by a group of students and NGOs, which aims at advocating Fair Trade by raising awareness of the expand the demand for Fair Trade alternatives in campus and communities.
The annual Convergence is an educational outreach. Through workshops, forums and sharing, this is to enhance participants’ skills in Fair Trade and to empower them in organizing campaigns in their own communities. Besides, this is a chance for participants to build network with cooperatives and other campaigners in United States.
Though participants are from different places with different backgrounds, we do have the same values and goals. Facilitated by USFT coordinators, participants listed out ten common values, one is to work towards the key elements of Fair Trade, locally and globally.
The convergence was then kicked off by the executive director of the Fair Trade Resources Network, Jackie DeCarlo. She gave us an inspiring keynote on the history of Fair Trade and she encouraged participants to keep on moving in this advocacy.
Started by an encouraging speech, programs ran into other phrase. Workshops and forums speakers are from the production, certification, and retails ends of the Fair Trade supply chain. Mr. Samrat Thong-iam and Mr. Man Samsee are Thai farmers, they grow organic Fair Trade rice. Representing their cooperatives in Thailand, they join the Fair Trade Rice Campaign, organized by ENGAGE, a non-profit organization works towards a just and sustainable world, these farmers travel around United States to promote Fair Trade rice and share how Fair Trade helps them in building a sustainable livelihood.
Besides, regional breakouts gave participants opportunities to share their experiences and difficulties in advocating Fair Trade in their communities. This was also a chance to build alliance in solving the problems and making the Fair Trade campaigns sustainable.
A Vendor Fair was set during lunch time, there were a number of companies and organization that have generously supported Fair Trade, they are Equal Exchange, Fair Trade Sports, Oxfam America, No Sweat Shop, TransFair USA and much more. This was the chance for participants to meet Fair Trade organization and products suppliers, and make connections.
Coming from far away Hong Kong, I was one of the participants. This was an incredible experience for me. Every student’s participants are enthusiastic in advocating Fair Trade, they have lots of ideas and plans in head. Martin Papp, is now a chief networking officer in Buywell International, the Fair Trade Company. He is one of the amazing participants I met in the Convergence. He gave up his final year studies in University, and be a full time volunteer in this company. He has traveled to many countries, looks for more fair trade products and introduces them into local markets, and builds networks with cooperatives. He would also like to prove, Fair Trade can be one of the sustainable business in the commodity market.
The road to succeed is not easy, but it is not impossible. In this Convergence, there are many successful organizations and campaigns, which we can learn from them. Once we still hold our belief and values. We can be one of them in the future.

Getting started
|
I only come across TIG recently and have been spending sometime recently studying the site. I browsed through member lists, check on latest entries and tried using different features of the site and concluded TIG is a wonderful platform for global collaboration and sharing.
The question I would like to ask is how come there are not many active members within Asia using this site. I think we need to find ways to promote TIG within Asian communities.

Miracle diets
|
The miracle diet trend has conquered Hong Kong nowadays. Modern cities have come to an age of ‘downsizing’--- tiny watches, dictionaries, cameras, mp3 players, laptops and motorcars are in great demand and supply. Maybe this movement has somehow influenced the thinking of the people, and thus creates a slimming fad.
I have to admit that some balanced and reasonable diets can help overweight people to lose weight and become hearty. However, there are so many fancy advertisements exaggerating the effect of diet plans. I remember one of them even advocates losing 30 lbs in 30 days. My first pop-up question is: Is it possible for one person to achieve that within such a short duration. How can a normal person shed such a large somatic bulk in a blink and remain alright? I am quite worried about the workability and side-effects of those extreme plans.
As I have mentioned above, the aesthetic perception of the society has changed. The mass media sometimes even promotes skinny models as beauties. This encourages both teenage girls and women to imitate and follow. These demands are matched with the increasing number of competitors in the weight reducing sector. These companies shape their courses with ultra-simplicity and least time-consuming, that is why one advertisement says extra weight can be shed through ‘simple diet plan and drink’ only. Yes, poisons can do this.
I would like to take this chance to point out the wrong concepts and messages in those miracle diets around us. There is nothing better than balanced diet together with adequate exercise.

Conquering worries
|
I'm going to leave my high school life,
there's so much to prepare before stepping into the next stage of life.
Though i always believe in my future,
i start to worry about evythg..
reality.reality.reality.
still, there are always different ways to find pleasure.
i placed myself on the court,
feeling the dazzling spot lights ahead of me.
i released all my stress & fear while playing basketball,
i found deep trust & courage from my dear teammates.
Afterall, the strengths inside me grew so strong that engulf my weakness.

i DONT have choice
|
Life is hard and complicated. When you were born, you started learning and studying. When you graduated from school, you have to find a job to make your living.
There are full of choices and opportunities in your life. Which path will you choose to walk along? Who will you choose to walk with?
Somehow, you don't have choices. You cannot choose what you want to do. People choose you in the way round.
But, once you get the "power", you can get it back.
Where can i find my own power?
